Amazon has launched a new delivery service in the UK, delivering boxes of grocery and household goods to customers. Amazon Pantry, which is exclusive to Prime members, is a new initiative from Amazon that offers access to low-price, non-perishable essentials. Amazon Pantry purchases are charged per box, and delivery of a box costs £2.99 and arrives the next day.
Already available in the US, Japan, Germany and Austria, Pantry was made available to UK Prime members on Monday.
Amazon Pantry offers more than 4,000 branded food and drink, health and beauty, pet and baby products. Prime members will be able to fill a Pantry box with up to 20 kilograms of groceries. As shoppers add an item, they’ll be able to see what percentage of the box it takes up. There are also pre-packed, curated boxes for occasions like a new baby or a weekend away.
A Growing Grocery Trend?
Amazon has been putting a concerted effort into the grocery vertical in the UK in recent months. Pantry comes after Amazon added a range of fresh and chilled items to the Prime Now one-hour delivery service in London and Birmingham in September. Could these new Amazon offerings hint that Amazon Fresh is on the horizon for UK sellers?
Currently only available in Seattle, California and New York, Amazon Fresh is a subscription-based, same-day service that delivers fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat to customers who pay the $299 annual fee. The introduction of Amazon Fresh to the UK would spell serious competition for the top supermarkets, so we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for updates.
Q4 Is Prime Time for Prime
This week, Amazon also announced a slash to the price of its Amazon Prime subscription, from £79 to £59, ahead of Black Friday. Last year, Amazon sold 64 items per second on Black Friday, receiving orders for more than 5.5 million items.
Amazon Pantry is the latest innovation for Prime members, and its introduction, along with the reduction in Prime membership cost right before Black Friday and Christmas is an indication that Amazon is setting its sights on a successful Q4.
