As we host webinars, post blogs and interact on social media, we frequently receive questions from online retailers about how to best sell on Amazon. Some questions are specific and technical. Some are broad and strategy based. Over the next few months (or longer — it depends on how many questions we get!), we’ll be answering your Amazon questions each week right here on our blog. Have an Amazon question you need answered by one of our marketplaces experts? Just email marketing@channeladvisor.com and check back each week to see if your question was chosen.

There are a lot of sellers on Amazon. How do I stand out from the crowd and get my product listings to show up on the first page of results?

Sincerely,

First Page Fever

Dear First Page Fever,

The fight for visibility on the first page of Amazon search results is a never-ending battle. There isn’t a single solution for getting your products where you want them, but there are certainly several things you can do to improve your chances.

Start with search terms. Think of search terms as additional words that aren’t in your product title but that may be the words a buyer is using when searching for your type of product. If you’re selling a product in a crowded category, research similar products and look at those that appear high in search rankings. Brainstorm terms that you may not be using to help gain a competitive edge.

Sales history also plays a big part in moving a listing to the top of the search results. But this can feel like a “chicken-or-the-egg” conundrum. How can you develop a strong sales history if you can’t get your products seen in the first place? If this is the case, consider using Amazon Sponsored Products to help build up an initial sales history for that listing. Amazon Sponsored Products is a pay-per-click service that allows you to promote your Amazon listings with keyword-targeted ads that appear on the Amazon search results page.

Once you start to move up in the search rankings, another small way to make your business stand out from the crowd is to fill out the “About Seller” pages. These pages will be seen by your potential buyers and can go a long way toward making them feel comfortable with you.

Best of luck,

John Bryan
